Heartburn is a condition that many people experience. It can cause reflux, which is when stomach acid moves upwards into the oesophagus. This can occur sporadically, for example after eating a fatty meal or drinking too much alcohol. If the symptoms do not go away, then heartburn becomes a condition that should be taken very seriously.

The causes:

The cause of heartburn, also known as acid indigestion, is dysfunction in a muscle at the lower end of the oesophagus. This muscle works  like a valve to prevent the upward movement of stomach contents. This backflow of acid, i.e. "reflux", is down to a combination of factors. First, the stomach produces too much acid, for example through stress or a poor diet. Second, there's excessive pressure in the abdomen due to obesity or restrictive clothing. Third, the muscle described previous does not contract properly.

The symptoms:

The acidic contents of the stomach are very irritating to the lining of the oesophagus – the two are never meant to come into contact with each other. This can cause constant pain and inflammation, and the oesophageal lining can actually become damaged. This can lead to further complications.

It's understandable that this burning pain causes many people to quickly reach for medication that neutralises stomach acid. This only addresses the symptoms. The deeper problem remains, whether excess stomach acid production, high abdominal pressure or weakness in the sphincter muscle between the stomach and oesophagus.

The treatment:

In worse cases when heartburn becomes chronic, the most common treatment is prescribed medication, whether proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers. Such medicines are very disruptive to the stomach environment. This is why it's a good idea to pay attention to symptoms like recurrent heartburn and take action sooner rather than later. Waiting too long can result in damage to the oesophagus as well as chronic heartburn.

A natural and more gentle alternative heartburn treatment is one of our beloved drink remedies! Bentomed works in three ways: The Gossendorf fango healing clay it contains is alkaline so it neutralise excess stomach acid. Metabolic products that are difficult to digest can hinder digestion – Bentomed picks up this material and encourages it to pass out of the body, which makes it easier for the stomach and intestinal tract to work well. In addition, healing clay fights inflammation and is anti-bacterial – it reduces abdominal pain related to inflammation and fights harmful bacteria. Bentomed addresses the root cause of the problem without disrupting normal stomach acidity balance.

Seven everyday heartburn tips:

  1. Avoid eating too late at night, eat more slowly and take the time to chew your food well. It's important that digestion is complete before you go to bed. In addition, consider many small meals per day rather than larger meals.
  2. Be sure to drink a lot, but avoid carbonated drinks and alcohol! Herbal teas like camomile, caraway, and fennel can be very soothing. Peppermint tea is not recommended.
  3. In the morning before breakfast and in the evening before going to bed, drink a glass of lukewarm water, ideally with a teaspoon of fangocur Bentomed mixed in.
  4. Sleep with your upper body elevated to lessen the danger of stomach acid moving upwards into the oesophagus.
  5. Limit your consumption of coffee, sweets, alcohol and cigarettes…or avoid them entirely.
  6. Try to reduce the amount of stress in your life. The stomach is especially sensitive to stress-related conditions.
  7. Do not wear clothing that is too tight around your midsection, for example pants, skirts and belts.

Order Bentomed here and stop heartburn from becoming a chronic problem!
