So maybe you have high blood pressure, or your triglycerides and cholesterol levels are less than ideal? Moreover, you would probably like to keep your prostate healthy in a natural way, or improve the health of the connective tissue in your breasts. Read on to get the answers…it's all about flaxseed! Why is it helpful, and what's the best way make use of all its benefits?
A newly discovered ancient healing remedy
So small and so effective: even the Greek physician Hippocrates had confidence in the reliability and effectiveness of flaxseed, as he used it in the treatment of many of the health issues of his patients. Thanks to modern research as well as practical studies, the correctness of this decision has also been wholly and completely confirmed in the 21st century. Flaxseeds, also known as linseeds, are among the bes plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Regular consumption of ground flaxseeds offers a multitude of health benefits. Here are just a few:
- Improved cholesterol, triglyceride and blood sugar values
- Effect for lowering high blood pressure
- Fights inflammation
- Counters constipation
The phenomenal effectiveness of flaxseeds has been scientifically proven
In addition to the health benefits mentioned above, regularly eating these wonder seeds is also recommended for specific health problems. It's been proven in studies that consuming three teaspoons of ground flaxseed daily has extremely positive effects on various prostate problems, for example for enlarged prostate as well inhibiting the growth of tumours. By doing this one simple thing, the patients who participated in the research experienced a significant improvement in their conditions.
It seems that consuming flaxseeds is also an effective way to improve women's health, specifically in terms of protecting and strengthening the connective tissue in the breasts.
In order to scientifically confirm this, the US National Cancer Institute conducted research involving 45 participants in 2010. The test subjects had something in common: all of them were found to have a high risk of developing breast cancer. This was either determined through a precautionary biopsy of the breast tissue or due to their having had breast cancer before. Naturally, a second group was also included in the study as a control – what differed between the two groups was that the first group consumed two teaspoons of ground flaxseeds on a daily basis by mixing it in with their food. Tissue samples were taken at the beginning and at the end of the study, and what happened in the meantime was quite astounding: there were markedly fewer precancerous changes in the tissue, and for 80% of the study participants a fall in the level of Ki-67 was also found – Ki-67 is associated with cell proliferation.
Our gut flora activates the lignans contained in flaxseed
One reason for these astounding results is down to the high amount of lignan precursors that flaxseeds contain, and these are activated by the healthy bacteria found in our intestines as part of the digestive process. Lignans can dampen the effects of the body's own estrogen, and in the long run this has a positive effect on the risk of developing breast cancer. Wholegrain foods, berries and green leafy vegetables also contain a high amount of lignans. By regularly combining these foods with ground flaxseeds, you can do something to prevent developing such conditions simply by modifying your diet a little.
Healthy eating every day – you can do it with flaxseeds
As we have seen, just a few teaspoons of ground flaxseeds are enough to enjoy all of the positive effects described above. There are a number of ways that you can put flaxseeds to use in your kitchen. One good option is adding ground flaxseeds to a salad, or you could sprinkle it on your morning porridge. If you're someone who bakes bread at home, then of course you could just mix flaxseed powder into the dough, and the same is true for healthy green smoothies.

As having healthy digestive flora in your intestines is crucial to the absorption of the lignans contained in flaxseeds, regularly detoxifying your digestive tract is recommended.
