The term "acid mantle" was coined by a researcher in 1928 to describe the more superficial environment of the skin. It was understood that this acidic coating was important in protecting the skin from bacteria. On the contrary, this acidic environment at the surface of the skin is in fact made up of waste products shed by the subcutaneous layer of the skin as well as the connective tissue near the surface of the skin. These materials should not be considered as defining the normal state of the skin. It is indeed unfortunate that this early discovery lead to such a misunderstanding regarding the meaning of "normal" skin.
Following the Second World War this terminology was adopted by nearly the entire cosmetics industry. From this premise, the idea that one should treat like with like was promoted, i.e. skin care products should have similar pH values to the skin. This is how the idea of low pH skin care was born. Nowadays the skin is exposed to a flood of excess acid.
With improved living conditions and the increase in industrial production came a plethora of illnesses related more or less directly to more "civilised living" including a variety of rheumatic disorders such as arthritis and gout, dermatitis, psoriasis and cellulite. Due to higher modern pollution levels as well as changes in the diet emphasising fast food along with an increased consumption of sugar, caffeine, meat and alcohol, the skin is flooded with acidic substances from inside and out. The buffer system which should be cleansing the body is often overwhelmed many times over and as a result the body deposits excessive waste in the superficial connective tissue including that of the subcutaneous layer of the skin.
Accompanying the normally produced sebum (oil) and sweat, it is common that acidic waste products are also transported to the surface of the skin. This can result in skin irritation (itching) as well as the development of skin conditions such as eczema. When low pH skin care products are applied to the skin, the excess acid can be absorbed by the skin: a bad situation becomes worse.
The cosmetics industry uses a myriad of chemical additives to achieve the desired pH level.
An additional problem related to low pH skin care products is the use of artificial ingredients to reach the desired pH level – these pH neutralising products also require preservatives to maintain their quality. These additives can be the cause of skin irritation as well as more serious skin conditions.
It's also apparent that the cosmetics industry conveniently overlooks the fact that the skin does not have the same pH values all over the body – and the pH values even change over the course of a day. Likewise various influences such as stress, sensitivity, diet and physical activity all effect the pH of the skin.
