What exactly is in fango healing clay that makes it so special, and how does it work in the body?

Fango healing clay is analysed by an independent university laboratory every three years and the concentrations of the contents are double-checked. In addition, the complete make-up is thoroughly analysed every five years. Concentrations must be consistent in order to maintain the highest level of quality.

Our fango healing clay is made primarily of silicon dioxide (SiO2), also known simply as silica.

Silica is more than an essential part of the Earth's crust – it is also one of the most important building blocks in every living organism. It is important for the health of connective tissue (fascia) as well as for good venous function. This is especially important as one ages – silica intake is vital in maintaining proper fascial tone, strong tendons and resilient muscles. Silica is well-known for its regenerating and rejuvenating effects on the body.

The additional contents are listed below, from highest to lowest in concentration:

Fe2O3
Iron (III) oxide (magnetite) improves the health of the intestinal lining and fights intestinal parasites. Iron is an essential component of haemoglobin, a protein which is responsible for the transport of oxygen in the blood. Iron is also important in cancer prevention as it strengthens immune function.

Al2O3
Aluminium oxide is an important catalyst in cellular function, primarily those in the intestines. It helps to regulate nutrient absorption.

SO3
Sulphur (or sulfur) is essential for life – it is present in two amino acids. In its elemental form it is not at all harmful to the body; on the contrary, it has anti-inflammatory effects which are important in the treatment of tuberculosis and chronic bronchitis as well as arthritis, gout and eczema.

TiO2
Titanium dioxide (titania) aids in regulation of metabolism.

K2O
Potassium dioxide (potassium) is vital in maintaining osmotic pressure in the cells (important in the regulation of what can and what cannot pass through the cell wall). Saltatory conduction in the heart is especially dependent on potassium, as it is essential to normal muscle and nerve function.

Na2O
Sodium oxide is the most common cation (having a positive electrical charge) in living organism and plays an important role in the maintenance of cellular balance.

CaO
Calcium oxide (lime) is derived from calcium carbonate, a compound essential for life. It is important in muscle function (including the heart) and the building of bones, and is an essential component in the nucleus of cells.

MgO
Magnesium oxide (magnesia) is important in muscular and nervous function and is also important in cellular function (especially brain cells). Magnesium activates a metabolic enzyme which is essential for digestion, stimulates gall bladder function and is important in disease resistance.

Our healing clay also contains several essential (i.e. necessary for life) trace elements:
manganese
(oxygen transport in the body), copper (regulates the uptake of iron, component of immune cells, oxygen transport, important component of enzymes), strontium (bone construction), barium (importance in human health not determined, important in the growth of plants), lead (an important trace element, not essential), chromium (plays a role in the maintenance of blood sugar and cholesterol levels in the blood), vanadium (essential for all living cells, important for the maintenance of bones and teeth, helps in regulating blood lipid levels and decreasing blood sugar levels), lithium (important for the nervous system)

According to analysis carried out by the Analytical Chemistry Institue of the University of Graz (13 May 2009) under the supervision of Professor Herbert Greschonig, Gossendorf Fango contains:

SiO2 56.6%, Fe2O3 7.5%, Al2O3 19.6%, H20 1.2% (chemically bound), other organic substances 3.7%, sulphur (S03) 3.5%, TiO2 1.4%, K2O 1.7%, Na2O 0.3%, CaO 1.1%, MgO 2.2%, P2O5 0.5, trace elements: Cu, As, Sr, Ba, Pb, Mn, Cr, V, Li.
